Job Summary:
The Apprentice Toolmaker is responsible for learning and assisting in the creation, maintenance, and repair of precision tools, molds, dies, and fixtures used in the manufacturing process. Under the guidance of experienced toolmakers, the apprentice will develop skills in machining, CAD/CAM design, and problem-solving within a manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Learning and Skill Development:
- Acquire fundamental knowledge of toolmaking techniques, materials, and machinery operation through a programme of structured education and training which formally combines and alternates learning in the workplace with learning in an education and training centre leading to a level 6 qualification on the National Framework of Qualifications.
- Study and understand technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD models related to tools, molds, dies, and fixtures.
- Develop proficiency in using various precision measuring instruments and hand tools.
Machining and Fabrication:
- Assist in setting up and operating machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and CNC machines.
- Learn to select appropriate cutting tools, machine speeds, and feed rates for different materials.
- Participate in the machining of components according to specifications.
Tool Design and Modification:
- Collaborate with senior toolmakers to design and modify precision tools, molds, dies, and fixtures using CAD/CAM software.
- Assist in creating detailed drawings and documentation for tool designs.
Tool Maintenance and Repair:
- Help in inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining tools to ensure their accuracy and performance.
- Learn to troubleshoot issues with tools, molds, dies, and fixtures, and assist in performing repairs.
Quality Control:
- Work with quality control personnel to ensure that manufactured tools meet specified tolerances and quality standards.
- Participate in inspections and measurements to verify the accuracy of completed tools.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols in the workshop and manufacturing environment.
- Learn about relevant industry regulations and compliance standards related to toolmaking.
Continuous Improvement:
- Contribute ideas and suggestions for process improvements in tool design, fabrication, and maintenance.
Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate effectively with other members of the manufacturing team, including engineers, designers, and operators.
Qualifications:
- Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
- Strong interest in mechanical and precision work.
- Basic understanding of mathematics and geometry.
- Good manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills.
- Proficiency in using computers and willingness to learn CAD/CAM software.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift moderate weights.
